Inspect teether for any signs of damage before EACH use. Cut off bead strand, and throw away all parts and pieces if any signs of damage. Children should always be supervised while using any teether/toy.

Teethers with bead strand should be used by one child. "Hand me down" teethers should first have bead strand removed by cutting bead strand and throwing away all pieces. The "Michigan" shaped portion can be washed in the dishwasher and then "handed down" to another child.
